It took a little time to finish this massive thing, but it was worth the wait! If we do say so ourselves, this is our best piece yet!
Buffets have come back into style and are immensely popular! (Wink, wink, keep an eye out for more of these sweeties!) We were very excited to stumble on to a few at the same time.
So how’d we do it?
We stripped the entire piece down to the natural wood and sanded it with 240 grain sandpaper for a luxuriously smooth wood finish.
Next, we carefully and consistently applied many (trust us, MANY) layers of ceiling white milk paint. We left a good deal of the wood grain showing through to give a whitewashed look that is reminiscent of Amish milk paint furniture.
Then, we hand-rubbed Red Mahogany stain on the top, inside the cabinet, on the drawer sides.
We did this with a sock. This technique eliminates brush streaks and allows us to thoroughly infuse the stain into the wood. The result is a smooth, lustrous finish that is breathtaking and invites an admirer to actually feel it.
Finally, we applied several coats of satin polyurethane to protect the finish and to add even more luster.
We hope you are as happy with the results as we are. This piece is truly something we are quite pleased with and we look forward to knowing it is providing comfort and beauty in someone’s home.
Buffets make excellent extra counter space if you are short on such and have the room. They make a luxurious, high end addition to any dining room or eating space. Otherwise, you could put on your creativity hat on and use it as linen storage in a large bathroom or as a dresser in a bedroom. With all the storage space from the drawers and cabinets the possibilities for functionality are many.
